I didn't expect to love this book, but I didn't expect to hate it as much as I do. I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I got to the 45% mark and had to stop because I was literally feeling queasy.

Since when is human trafficking hot? Since when is the answer to finding out that a girl who had been sold as a sex slave as a minor and literally beaten until multiple bones broke not to call the police? Instead, Stephan collars Brianna to make her feel "more secure". Y'know what would help her feel more secure? Legal intervention. Y'know what's a better choice than claiming her as your own? Getting her into intensive counseling.

Instead, Stephan punishes her for being slightly spacy by forcing her to take a cold shower, for hesitating to kiss him on his command by taking away her books, the one thing he's found that makes her happy after all the abuse she's suffered. In other words, her "saviour" just abuses her further. Sure, he's not beating her until her bones crack, but he is quite aware that she cannot truly consent to what he is doing due to the abuse she has already suffered, but he still doesn't get her the help she needs. A GED is all well and good, but therapy would be infinitely better.

That this book romanticizes human trafficking, minors being sold as sex slaves, is simply vile. There is nowhere that this book, let alone its sequels, can go that would redeem them.

Slave Sherri Hayes 9781612130484 Books Reviews

First, I feel like I should say that the cover of this book is very misleading and even though it is called Slave there is no BDSM in it, there's no sex at all actually. I have a habit of just reading a book without reading the description and only reading a blurb about it, so I was surprised by what I read with this one. I have read some other books by Sherri Hayes (The Daniels Brothers series to be specific) and I found this book to be quite different. It seemed a little darker and not as funny as the others. Slave is about Stephan, who comes across as strong, successful, and confident. As you read you start seeing this other side to him that is kind-hearted and compassionate. The female lead is Brianna, who is a very broken, scarred, timid, and insecure 18 year old. She was somehow forced into the life that Stephan finds her in at the beginning of the book and he decides to to help her. The beginning of this book sucks you in because you just want to know what happened to Brianna and if Stephan can truly help her. I really like that you get both sides of the story from both the male lead as well as the female lead and not just one or the other. While reading you can see just how dedicated Stephan is to Brianna and helping her, and how patient he is as well. The book isn't at all action packed in any way but you can see a change between both characters. I can't wait to read the next one.
It has been a long time since a book "grabbed me" within the first few pages. Once I started I couldn't put it down. One of the reviewers commented that Stephan was to good to be true. I'm sorry, but that's why it is called fiction. If I wanted to read about an average guy, I would not be reading romance. I loved how Stephan saved Brianna. He kept his own desires at bay to help her, keep her safe. I haven't even finished the first book but I am so hooked I had to write about it. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I just purchased the second book. I think I found one of my new favorite authors.
I went into this with no expectations. BDSM is a mixed bag for me, but some of the reviews convinced me.

First off this is not an easy read. It features the very real aftermath of sexual abuse, torture, and sexual slavery. This is a hard read and I was hoping that what happened to Brianna wouldn't be glamorized. It wasn't. Brianna is broken. Seriously broken. And Stephan for all of his patience is not a psychologist. He knows the BDSM scene. And so does the author. But after something like Brianna went through psychology is a must. And I was sad to see it wasn't there. I also didn't like Stephan punishing Brianna for inattention. It felt like a betrayal of her trust.

Ultimately while well written this was too hard for me to want to continue.

Three stars.
I love BDSM novels and I really hoped I would love this three-novel series.

For me, it comes down to the fact that (Bri)Anna is, in my opinion, unable to give informed consent. She has been in sexual captivity since before her 18th birthday and has never had consensual sex with a man. When Stephan rescues her, she is unable to even speak due to the abuse she suffered. I find it morally reprehensible that Stephan would pursue any sexual relationship with her, much less a D/s relationship, no matter how badly he wanted to cure her.

I think the general storyline (slave rescued by kind master) is a good one, but the choice of a badly-abused, barely-18-year-old main character ruined it for me.
I loathe cliffhangers and wish someone would have written this contained one in their review because then I wouldn't have wasted my time. Hours of my life I will never get back. Greedy authors that write cliffhangers are only in it for the money, not their craft. If you were worth your salt, you would be able to write a full freaking novel and sell them because your stories are that good, not because you basically ransomed the rest of the story. You would have to pay me to read the rest of the story so obviously this author isn't good enough to make money without the ransom.
I didn't expect to love this book, but I didn't expect to hate it as much as I do. I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I got to the 45% mark and had to stop because I was literally feeling queasy.
