I needed a new audiobook and after two books by new narrators, I was ready to fall back on a favorite and listen to Eric Dove narrate. I'm probably his crazy, stalker, fangirl of one. I love his voice. This is what I picked.I have to say that second chance romances are not my thing. Too much resentment, recrimination and negativity. The couple tends to spend most of the time sniping at each other for whatever the reason is that broke them up in the first place and I find that rather hard to tolerate. At least for this story, I am glad of Jude's devil may care attitude. It's a good counterpoint to Libby's snark and constant, indiscriminate lashing out at Jude for having hurt her in the past. There was a lot of "she knew she was being unreasonable, but it felt better to lash out at him than deal with her feelings" stuff going on.
I really felt for Jude right through this book. Apparently, he had done something to hurt Libby in their past and you can tell it was not something he wanted to do. I got the feeling right through that it was something he was forced to do and he had been paying for it ever since. It really pissed me off no one gave him a chance. His brothers' disappointment and scolding, and Libby being a total bitch towards him. She never let up. It colored the entire story and made me think really poorly of her.
I did not like Libby at all. She did stupid things. She did mean things and like I said before, she was a complete bitch to Jude. She treated him unfairly even when he was sweet and trying to win her over, when she was frustrated and bored, and he was trying to keep her entertained, when she was in danger and he was trying to protect her, keep her safe. When I was finally starting to like her again, something happens and she runs. I hate when heroines run. Stay and fight, or stay and deal with the situation like an adult, dammit! As if running away will solve anything!!
It really annoys me that this is the second heroine in a row from my recent reading I have thoroughly disliked. If not for the fact that I wanted to know how Jude gets his happy ending, I might not have made it through the book. He deserves it after all the crap that gets thrown at him. I've never seen a hero get as beat up as Jude, and I don't think I've ever read a hero where I've been pissed off on his behalf either. I'd rather his happy ending was not with Libby but WTH, we're stuck with her being the heroine.
There's nothing wrong with the book itself. It's well written and the story was entertaining, but boy oh boy, did Libby piss me off. If I could reach into the book and smack her across the head with a two-by-four, I would. I really want to. Ms Burrows should feel proud she evoked such strong emotions out of me, albeit some rather negative emotions. My Steve always reminds me, it is the hallmark of a good author if he / she can evoke strong emotional reactions from the reader through their writing.
Let's talk about the narration the fact that this is an audiobook for a bit. One of the things which kept me going was listening to Eric's voice (and Jude's happy ending!), but then Eric could read the back of a cereal box to me and I'd happily listen to him.
I learned something about audiobooks too and the reading experience because I am listening to an audiobook rather than reading it. (I learn a bit more about the audiobook experience with each one I listen to!) When you have a good narrator it makes a huge difference to how much you enjoy the book. When the book is good and the narrator is good, it makes a good book even better. Think of the narrator's voice as the actors in a movie and how good actors affect the outcome of a movie. The flip side is if the book is not so good, then the narrator can highlight through his narration what is not working in the story for you because with listening to an audiobook, you are not rushing. You are listening to every word at a steady pace and you absorb every word, every nuance of what is going on. If you were reading and came to a part in a book you didn't like, you could skim it or read faster to avoid the unpleasant experience. It's much harder to do with an audiobook.
I'm still going to read / listen to the next book in the series as I've already purchased the Audible version of the book. I hope the next heroine is not as annoying and the next hero does not get as beat up as poor Jude. I don't think I could deal with another hero being run through the wringer like that.

Wilde Nights in Paradise Wilde Security Tonya Burrows 9781622666973 Books Reviews
I was in a bit of a reading slump. I just finished a reread of my favorite author's series, and nothing appealed to me. I saw Wilde Nights in Paradise come up as a freebie, and remembered reading Seal of Honor by this author, and enjoying it. I one-clicked, hoping for the best. Within the first 2 paragraphs, my inner reader was charmed and intrigued by Jude. Who was this hyper, funny, bored hero? And then when Libby entered the mix, well, I was solidly hooked.
As this is review number 121, I am not going to rehash the whole plot. Jude and Libby have a history. Despite his cavalier, laid back attitude, Jude runs so deep. The author gives us glimpses of his promise throughout the book. Jude is thoughtful, romantic, a little wild, but in such a good way. He loosens Libby up and shows her how to have fun. And he has a major, long held case of the "I'm not worthy's" Oh my, when he broke his feelings down for his brothers, I was bawling. And I am not a book crier. Ohmagahd, I loved Jude.
Libby was not down with being protected against a threat by Jude. Or being near Jude. Or on the same planet as Jude. She had what, by all outward appearances, were legitimate reasons for her opinions of Jude. But Libby wasn't able to ignore her reaction to Jude, even though she did not want to be attracted to him. These two threw off so much heat, I thought my was going to have a meltdown!
So, bottom line, I loved Wilde Nights in Paradise. Ms. Burrows writes characters who are charming, engaging and multi-faceted. There is humor and sweetness and hawt smexy times. As previously stated, at one point, I cried like a baby. I am now off to one-click the rest of the series. Highly recommend this title!
Perfect summer read with a little bit of everything. Romance, suspense, humor, great characters and an HEA! Jude Wilde, former marine, turned security officer, working with his four brothers at Wilde Security, is hired to protect Libby, a past love he was engaged to but had ended rather unpleasantly eight years ago and so he left. Poor Jude, he couldn't seem to catch a break and of course I wanted to know why the relationship ended and what was going on with Libby?
"They all knew Jude was the family f*** up, and he'd made his peace with that."
I was hooked from the beginning with the banter between brothers, the secrets Jude carried and the engagement ring he carried in his pocket for the woman who once wore it.
When things didn't end so well with he and Libby they both moved on with their lives but now they are brought back together and they have to pretend they are in a relationship and Jude has to protect her.
Needless to say the chemistry is still there and it was only a matter of time before they acted on it.
Libby wasn't exactly thrilled with Jude protecting her at all but it seemed to be what her father wanted and thought was best. He played a huge role in her life and there were some things I was suspicious about.
"But I can't stand him. He's selfish, hedonistic, reckless, and...I don't want to be near him." Jude grinned. "You're full of compliments."
Yep, I knew I would enjoy these two, their banter, their deep love for one another that they both didn't want to admit was still there and the steam factor was awesome. Now with her life having been threatened they decide it is best for Libby to leave her home and job for a while as well as Jude, so the two of them head to Key West to stay in a beautifully hidden house that belongs to one of Jude's friends.
It is here where they have to be around each other and Libby decides to give him one night and one night only. Boy what a smokin hot night it is. Problem is, will they be able to stop and continue to be in each other's presence without acting on any impulses either one of them have? After all there are some unresolved feelings and questions.
"I want you, and I know I shouldn't. I can't help myself."
Yeah, I don't think I could have kept myself away from Jude either. Tall, sexy, tattooed and blue eyed, former Marine, yeah ummm no way in hell!
So while they continue their stay things get interesting, secrets are partially revealed, feelings explored, but danger still lurks and Libby finally realizes how much danger she is in, actually becomes frightened but realizes that Jude will protect her no matter what and so much more.
"I will keep you safe," he whispered.
Tonya wrote an awesome book!
Highly recommend this great summer read!! Go check it out!
